AS A RULE OF THUMB – USE THIS CHART:

SWEEPING NEED – KEY SYMPTOMS: 

Fireplace

* Smoking fireplace
* Low chimney draught
* Soot, tar or smokey smells 
* Difficulties with lighting fires
* Poor weak fires – with no roar!

 Falling Soot

* Into hearth and fireplace
* On roofs, and outside pathways etc

Tar or Creosote

* Gathering in the chimney breast
* Forming on the stove door windows
* Growing on chimney terminal or cowls

N.B.

Extra use of your fireplace during long cold winters will increase the soot building up in your chimney system, so at least an annual sweep, may be essential… 

Only a few of my customers have their chimneys swept more than once a year – I’m sure that’s so for most Sweeps.  However, soot is not the only cause of blockages, other reasons may be: leaves, cobwebs, nests, etc…

A clean well-swept chimney, will undoubtedly improve performance and fuel efficiency of fireplaces – helping justify maintenance outlays, over & above safety reasons.  Also, most insurance companies now require an annual professionally certificated sweep – noting 30,000 UK chimney fires reported last year!
