Golden Rules

 Two Golden Rules:

  • FIRST RULE:

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER BURN MATERIAL WITH MOISTURE ABOVE 20%

“Spend time, money, and effort to ensure your fuel is dry ~ the dryer the better. Control your firewood moisture level with a moisture-meter.”

  • SECOND RULE:

SMOULDERING CAUSES DEPOSITS & BLOCKAGES, HAVE HOT FIRES: 225 to 475 (C)

“To extend burn periods, stoke with larger harder logs ~ well seasoned oak, mix with coal if suitable.  Re-light as often as necessary, use a stove thermometer.”

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY; SMOULDERING or WET FUEL

  • IS DIFFICULT TO LIGHT, WITH DISAPPOINTING FIRES
  • COULD AT LEAST DOUBLE YOUR (NECESSARY) FUEL COSTS
  • FILLS CHIMNEYS WITH DEPOSITS – CAUSING SMOKE INGRESS DANGER
  • FILLS CHIMNEYS WITH DEPOSITS – WHICH COULD CAUSE A CHIMNEY FIRE
  • INTRODUCES WETTING CONDITIONS THAT EXACERBATE CHIMNEY CORROSION
  • INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION PRODUCES CARBON MONOXIDE – INVISIBLE, ODOURLESS, TOXIC

Commonly available from around £10 to £20.  I sell them from my van for £12-50

Control firing temperature to optimise performance. Reduce flue-way deposits, and avoid over-firing. The pointer shows conditions on a temperature scale. Fits magnetically.

Honeywell CO AlarmCommonly available from around £25 to £50.  I stock two types on my van, and retail them as follows: Kidde £34-25 Honeywell £43-50

It is important that flue gasses are expelled from your home. Should you have a leak, a CO alarm can be a life-saver, for humans and animals.
